Para-Military groups are on the rampage virtually operating unabated, kidnappings are taking place at an unprecedented level and last year alone they killed over 2000 men, women and children. They post videos on the internet of torture and executions to generate fear for any one who opposes them. They’ve assassinated journalists, lawyers, policeman and judges; and recently have taken up the practice of beheading many of their victims. No, this isn’t Iraq or the Middle East and it’s not somewhere in South America. These under reported events are taking place in cities all across the U.S./ Mexico border. This documentary exposes the real truth behind the headlines. From the viewpoint of the players and the victims; this situation gets exposed in graphic detail with never before seen footage of the most powerful terrorists on earth. The price for allowing our government to minimize this situation any longer is going to be higher than any of us are willing to pay.

Inconveniently true and heart wrenching, this story is about how the rich world, immorally, disposes of its large volumes of junk electronic appliances, such as scrap computers, cell phones, TVs, printers, among other things. Few people even bother to wonder what our e-waste ends up doing to the environment, or other people’s environments.
The reality is, the U.S. dumps much, if not most, of its e-waste to poor communities in China, India and other developing countries, where job-hungry workers labor ten-plus-hour days frying circuit boards on coal-fired stoves, burning plastic pieces to smell the grade before sorting and, in the most horrifying scene, swishing stripped motherboards in acid baths to filter out the gold without any protection. These workshop shacks are filled with lung-choking gas or billows of eye-burning smoke, some as colorful as soy sauce. In China’s most famous e-trash town, Guiyu in eastern Guangdong Province, rivers literally run black. Air is filled with baked circuitry and you can smell it well before arrival. Preliminary medical exams have found alarmingly high lead levels in the blood of young children, who performed worse in intelligence exams than kids from neighboring towns. The medical researchers need a lot more years to determine how serious the health toll really is, but what’s certain is, damage done will be impossible to reverse, such as the effect of lead on the brain development of the young.
A difficult production in both emotional and physical terms, the story captures many aspects of a trade that has been going on much neglected by the media and the public. Scant print reports have exposed the e-waste dumping a few years ago, but a graphical presentation tells the story in a much more powerful way, which I believe is not only of great archival value but also is an example of outstanding journalism.

The American education system is failing. It's time to do something. 'Flunked,' narrated by Joe Mantegna, is a full-length documentary designed to be both informative and entertaining, without compromising on the truth of the crisis we are facing in education today. Most people are well aware of the declining test scores and competitiveness of the average American student, as well as myriad other problems facing education today. However, complaining about the problem, while easy to do, produces little productive results. Instead, 'Flunked' focuses on some of today's schools nationwide that are 'getting it right'---attaining great results in terms of college preparation, high test scores, and graduating competent workers for tomorrow's economy.
